Why Rush Acacia?

There are 37 fraternities in the Greek system at Cal. While the entire Cal Greek system is of the utmost quality, Acacia has always been leading the pack in membership, leadership, philanthropy, education, and social events.

Our pledge program has been designed so that you, as an individual and as a member of a pledge class, can grow and learn to understand the term "brotherhood." While mentally challenging, the pledge semester is entirely non-hazing, a term other fraternities like to use but not follow. Acacia does not feel that the degradation and humiliation of future brothers follows the ideas of brotherhood.

Our members grow as leaders, and are provided with opportunities when graduation comes near. Acacia will help you put yourself on track for graduate school, the workplace, or whatever you chose to do.

Most of all, in Acacia you will make your college years something to remember. Date parties, Night on the Nile, and other social events will give you memories that no camera can catch.

Acacia Fraternity: Common Questions

   How does Rush exactly work?

There are two types of rush: formal and informal. Formal Rush is a designated week that the local Interfraternity Council (IFC) sets at the beginning of each semester. Fraternities open up their doors, have free dinner and events, and those interested come in, meet the brothers, and see what each chapter has to offer. If the brothers of a certain chapter wish to see you as a member of their house, they will extend what is known as a "bid" to become a pledge, or probationary member. Bids usually give that person a certain ammount of time to make the decision.

Informal rush happens all the time at Acacia. Those who are interested can contact any brother, and ask whatever questions they wish. If they have potential to be good brothers, they will be invited to many social events to give them a feel for what life is like in Acacia. Again, a bid would be extended to the person if the chapter feels it is appropriate, and upon acception, he will become a pledge member.

What Is Required of Me As a Pledge?

Pledgeship is challenging, and can be considered similar to a 1-2 Unit Class at Cal. The difference is it will be one of the most rewarding and fun classes you have ever taken.

Generally, requirements are given to pledge classes (all of the pledge members of a certain semester) as a whole, and are designed to teach the concept of brotherhood and the ideals of Acacia. These include the organization of one brotherhood event for the entire chapter, a chapter retreat, a house improvement project (chosen by the class), and a philanthropy event to benefit whoever you chose.

Your minimum time commitment is for about one hour only two nights a week, however many chose to spend more time. Usually, the entire chapter meets on Mondays for a general meeting and Wednesdays for required brotherhood events.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are social or study nights. Usually, social events are planned for Thursdays (a Cal tradition) and are not required (but highly recommended!). There is usually always something fun going on, but it is your choice to partake in it depending on how caught up you are with school. Academics, at Acacia, must come first.

Ok, Sounds Good. How Much Does This Cost?

Pledgeship is $80 a month, and includes 10 meals a week, free laundry, all social events, all brotherhood events, and everything else the fraternity has to offer.

Living in the Chapter House costs $750 a month (well below the cost of the dorms), and includes all of the above along with DSL Internet and Premium Cable TV in every room.
